Welcome to the web page of Autism National Committee (AUTCOM)! This is the only autism advocacy organization dedicated to "Social Justice for All Citizens with Autism" through a shared vision and a commitment to positive approaches. Our organization was founded in 1990 to protect and advance the human rights and civil rights of all persons with autism and related differences of communication and behavior.

We, as autistic people and friends and family of autistic individuals, do not see autism as a tragic epidemic. We view autism as a part of life with both challenges and abilities that deserve to be accommodated. We believe that autistic individuals have the right to participate in all levels of autism advocacy, at all levels of government, and at all agencies and committees making policies about autism, alongside families and supporters.

About the National Resource Center for Supported Decision-Making The National Resource Center for Supported Decision-Making (NRC-SDM) builds on and extends the work of Quality Trust's Jenny Hatch Justice Project by bringing together vast and varied partners to ensure that input is obtained from all relevant stakeholder groups including older adults, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), family members, advocates, professionals and providers. The NRC-SDM partners bring nationally recognized expertise and leadership on SDM, representing the interests of and receiving input from thousands of older adults and people with I/DD. They have applied SDM in groundbreaking legal cases, developed evidence-based outcome measures, successfully advocated for changes in law, policy and practice to increase self-determination and demonstrated SDM to be a valid, less-restrictive alternative to guardianship.

Quality Trust is an independent, non-profit advocacy organization focused on improving the lives of children and adults with disabilities and their families in the District of Columbia and beyond. We work with individuals and family members to solve problems, identify opportunities for learning and contribution and find creative ways to minimize �??differences�?? and make the most of each person�??s abilities.

The mission of CPSD is to empower citizens with disabilities to become self-sufficient, productive members of society through employment in jobs and environments that are typical in our society. These individuals should be paid at competitive wages with commensurate benefits, where citizens with disabilities work and live side-by-side with other community members in integrated settings. CPSD advocates for comprehensive, innovative public policy reform based on a presumption of competence on the part of all citizens with disabilities.

The National Center on Law and Elder Rights (NCLER) will provide trainings, case consultations, and technical assistance for legal services and the aging/disability network. The NCLER will focus on the priority legal issues impacting older adults with the greatest social and economic needs. Stay tuned for more information from Justice in Aging, who is creating the center for the Administration on Community Living. The NCLER will be live on the web in 2017. The Theory of Positive Disintegration is a novel approach to personality development. The theory is a forerunner of what today is called post-traumatic growth. It postulates that in some individuals, crises disrupt normal personality stability allowing an opportunity for the conscious and volitional rearrangement of the self. As the individual reviews his or her values, lower aspects of the self can be inhibited in favor of an idealization of higher goals and aspirations.

Philosophy with Children is a movement that has been in existence more or less formally for as long as there have been adults who are interested in children�??s ideas about the world, about themselves as human subjects, and about the fundamental issues-epistemological, ontological, aesthetic and ethical-which are the common heritage of us all.

The Kids Philosophy Slam is designed to make philosophy accessible and fun for kids of all ages and abilities, to promote a philosophical dialogue between kids and adults, and to promote a greater awareness of philosophy and education in everyday life. Imagine the symptoms of Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson�??s, Epilepsy and Anxiety Disorder�?� all in one little girl. Rett Syndrome is serious lifelong Neurological Disorder. Diagnosed almost exclusively in girls, symptoms typically appear in toddlerhood. Many children with Rett are unable to speak, walk or use their hands. Breathing problems, feeding tubes, seizures, anxiety, gastrointestinal and orthopedic issues are common.

P.A.V.E. was founded by Marjie Thompson and it grew nationally by the reciprocal backing of parents and teachers supporting children who had suffered the effects of undiagnosed vision problems. After having searched for answers to the children�??s learning problems, the children were finally diagnosed and successfully treated by a developmental/behavioral optometrist, and the treatment given was vision therapy.

Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is a term used to describe visual impairment that occurs due to brain injury. CVI differs from other types of visual impairment which are due to physical problems with the eyes. CVI is caused by damage to the visual centers of the brain, which interferes with communication between the brain and the eyes. The eyes are able to see, but the brain is not interpreting what is being seen.

What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a neurological condition which affects the nervous system. Epilepsy is also known as a seizure disorder. It is usually diagnosed after a person has had at least two seizures that were not caused by some known medical condition.

In fact, they are four to ten times more likely to be abused than their peers without disabilities. Compared to the general population, people with developmental disabilities are at greatest risk of abuse[1] and �?? Tend to be abused more frequently. Are abused for longer periods of time. Are less likely to access the justice system. Are more likely to be abused by a caregiver or someone they know; many are repeatedly abused by the same person. Are more likely to remain in abusive situations
